Originality is the art of concealing your sources. Utter originality is, of course, out of the question. We do not inherit this land from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. Why can't somebody give us a list of things that everybody thinks and nobody says, and another list of things that everybody says and nobody thinks. Originality is nothing but judicious imitation. The most original writers borrowed one from another. The instruction we find in books is like fire. We fetch it from our neighbours, kindle it at home, communicate it to others and it becomes the property of all. Originality does not consist in saying what no one has ever said before, but in saying exactly what you think yourself. What a good thing Adam had - when he said a good thing, he knew nobody had said it before. All cases are unique and very similar to others. I invent nothing. I rediscover. There is nothing new under the sun. When people are free to do as they please, they usually imitate each other. Originality is deliberate and forced, and partakes of the nature of a protest. All profoundly original work looks ugly at first. Riding hard for glory. What is originality? Undetected plagiarism. The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves. |
