All our talents increase in the using, and every faculty both good and bad, strengthens by exercise. Conciseness is the sister of talent. Genius does what it must, and talent does what it can. In this world people have to pay an extortionate price for any exceptional gift whatever. There is no substitute for talent. Industry and all the virtures are of no avail. Talent is always conscious of its own abundance, and does not object to sharing. The luck of having talent is not enough; one must also have a talent for luck. A talent somewhat above mediocrity, shrewd and not too sensitive, is more likely to rise in the world than genius, which is apt to be perturbable and to wear itself out before fruition. Great talents are the most lovely and often the most dangerous fruits on the tree of humanity. They hang upon the most slender twigs that are easily snapped off. Everyone has a talent. What is rare is the courage to follow the talent to the dark places where it leads. The crowning blessing of life - to be born with a bias to some pursuit. Concealed talent brings no reputation. The world is always ready to receive talent with open arms. |
